Most fence repairs cost $300 to $900 in 2026, going by national figures. Small jobs, such as a board, a latch or a gate adjustment, run $100 to $300. Large ones, with several posts or a section lying flat, run $900 to $2,500.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Local labor, material prices and what we find in your yard move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.
| Repair | Typical cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Minor | $100 to $300 | One board, loose hardware, small gate adjustment |

| Major | $900 to $2,500 | Several posts, a fallen section, structural damage |
How much does it cost to fix a leaning fence?
It depends on how many posts have let go. The lean is in the posts, not the panels. One or two posts is a standard repair in the table. If a long stretch is leaning the same way after a storm, we price that stretch as new fence, since that is cheaper than paying for each post as a separate repair.
Why is my fence leaning, and can it be fixed without replacing it?
In Clarksville the usual reasons are rot and wind. Humid air and wet clay keep a wood post damp at the soil line, and that is where it goes soft. A storm then pushes on a solid privacy fence and the weak posts give. Posts that were set shallow, or in a hole that stopped on rock, lean sooner. When the panels are still good, new posts with the old panels rehung is a proper fix.
How much does it cost to replace a rotted fence post?
Replacing one or two posts normally falls in the $300 to $900 band of the national figures. The work is to free the rails, pull the post with its old concrete, set a new one and fasten everything back. A footing poured into a rock pocket, or a root wrapped around it, makes the job slower.
My gate sags and will not latch. Repair or replace?
Repair it in most cases. The cause is nearly always the hinge post leaning, hinges that have worn or pulled, or a frame that is no longer square. Our clay swells in a wet spring and shrinks in a dry August, and that movement alone can put a latch out of line. We reset the post, brace the frame and move the latch. A gate is replaced when the frame itself is rotted or bent.
How much does a contractor charge to fix a broken gate latch?
It is a minor repair, $100 to $300 in the national 2026 figures. Most companies have a minimum charge for coming out. Make a list of every loose picket and stiff hinge before you call, and have it all done on the one visit.
My fence posts lifted over the winter and the gate will not close. Can they be reset?
Yes. Posts that moved over winter here have usually shifted with wet clay, not been pushed up by deep frost. Middle Tennessee gets freezing spells, but the ground does not freeze deep the way it does further north, so frost heave is a small part of the story. Soft, saturated clay and a shallow footing are the larger part. We take the post out and set it again deeper, with the hole shaped so water does not sit around it.
My fence line goes wavy every winter. Is it the soil or a bad installation?
Some of each. Clay that swells and shrinks will move a fence a little, and that part is the soil. But a line that goes wavy every year points to posts that are too shallow or too small for a 6-foot solid fence. Deeper posts in properly sized footings stay put in the same ground.
A branch bent my aluminum fence. Do I need a whole new panel?
It depends on how the fence was made. Where rails and pickets are separate pieces, only the damaged ones are changed. Where the fence came as welded or assembled panels, the section is swapped as a unit. Send a photo and the brand if you know it, and we can normally say which.
